WHAT’S THE SCIENCE BEHIND INFRARED AND FIT BODYWRAP SYSTEM

The history of infrared

Infrared has been widely studied and used for centuries. Thermal therapy can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Finns, Romans, Indians and the most well known infrared practitioners, the Chinese. In India, yogis have been known to use infrared palm healing, especially for eye strains. In Asia, over 700,000 infrared systems have been sold. Over 30 million people have received localized infrared treatment in Asia, Europe, and Austria.

Sir William Herschel, a British-German astronomer and composer, began studying the planets and stars in the 1700s. In the 1800s while using colored filters to observe sunlight passing through prisms, Herschel discovered infrared by testing the individual temperatures of each color. He found that the temperatures of the colors increased from the violet to the red part of he spectrum. After noticing this pattern, he decided to measure the temperature just beyond the red portion of the spectrum (where no sunlight was visible). Surprisingly, he found that this region’s temperature was the highest of all. This lead to the discovery that there is light we cannot see with our eyes and that infrared itself is a form of heat.

Shortly after Hershel’s findings, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, an American surgeon, scientist and proponent of holistic health treatments, opened what we would now call a wellness center with a focus on nutrition, exercise and holistic health care. In 1893, he introduced the electric “light bath”–an individual cabinet-like chamber that utilized the heat from light bulbs. The technology continued to advance in Europe and Asia, with the first infrared sauna coming out of Japan in the 1960s.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS INFRARED?

Infrared is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is a spectrum of light radiation. Yes, radiation! But not all radiation is bad! The term radiation just means the release of energy as moving waves or streaming particles. The radiation we receive from the electromagnetic spectrum is considered non-harmful, natural radiation. It includes everything from radio waves to UV rays, micro waves and color. This is a naturally occurring process, and because the earth itself emits radiation, all living things on the planet do as well.

HOW IT WORKS

When it comes to infrared heat therapy, the closer the body is to the heat source, the deeper the heat can penetrate and the more effective it will be.

Heat from the FIT Bodywrap can penetrate up to 1.5 inches into the body.  How?  Because it has 19 flexible carbon fiber heating elements that contour to the body and encapsulate it in 360 degrees of luxurious, direct infrared heat.

Other IR systems, such as saunas and pods, have emitters that are located within the walls.  Since the heat weakens as it travels through ambient air before reaching the body, sessions result in less effective, indirect infrared heat.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BODY WRAPS, SAUNAS, AND PODS?

What is the difference?? They’re all in the same classification of ‘Infrared Saunas’, but they do have some big differences! There are dry saunas, infrared saunas, infrared body wraps, steam saunas, and sauna pods, each of which provide similar, yet varied benefits, and all at different levels of efficiency.

Types of Infrared Heat

There are three types, or wavelengths, of infrared heat. Our sun’s output is made up of a mixture of them, but the human body emits far infrared specifically.

  • Near infrared penetrates skin deep (the epidermis) and can help with skin conditions. This is the infrared heat you feel in a sauna.
  • Mid infrared penetrates a bit deeper to improve circulation.
  • Far infrared warms the body directly, not the air around it.  It penetrates deeply into the body (up to 1.5”, right into the dermis) allowing it to provide the most benefits.

The FIT Bodywrap produces far infrared heat, so it strictly penetrates the body, providing wellness benefits such as pain relief, weight loss, cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation, relaxation, and so much more.

Saunas & Sauna Pods & Wraps

THE FIT BODYWRAP APPLIES INFRARED DIRECTLY TO YOUR BODY, SO NO HEAT IS LOST, AND THE HEAT PENETRATES DEEPER INTO THE BODY.

Infrared saunas and sauna pods use the full spectrum of infrared, including near, mid, and far, to be effective. Far infrared heat is produced by a heating element which heats the ambient air, while mid infrared delivers that heat to the body. Near infrared helps that heat penetrate the skin.A traditional sauna session usually tops out at about 20-30 minutes because the body cannot handle breathing in the hot air for much longer than that. FIT Bodywrap sessions are up to 60 minutes long and allow for the participant to relax and breathe room temperature air. Many of the benefits are often achieved within the last half hour of the session because it takes the body a bit of time to raise its temperature and begin sweating. Thus, infrared body wraps are significantly more effective.

In summary, the main difference between a sauna and a body wrap is that traditional saunas apply indirect infrared heat – that is, they heat the air around the body, and this heat doesn’t penetrate very deeply. The FIT Bodywrap applies infrared directly to your body, so no heat is lost, and the heat penetrates deeper into the body.
