Female sexual health is an essential part of overall wellness. Many women experience changes in desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm or comfort — especially during perimenopause, postpartum and after menopause. At Glendale Whole Health, we address female sexual dysfunction with an integrative, regenerative and functional medicine approach that restores vitality and confidence.
What Is Female Sexual Dysfunction
Female sexual dysfunction refers to persistent difficulties with sexual response or satisfaction that cause distress. These may include:
- Low desire or lack of interest in intimacy
- Difficulty with arousal or lubrication
- Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Trouble achieving orgasm
- Reduced sensitivity or satisfaction
Sometimes these concerns are classified as conditions such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) or genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Our goal is to look beyond labels and uncover the root causes.
Our Evaluation
We take a comprehensive approach that always includes:
- Validated sexual health questionnaires to track baseline and progress
- Comprehensive labs to assess hormones, metabolic status and inflammation
- Hormone evaluation — estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, cortisol, insulin
- Pelvic and vaginal health — dryness, elasticity, pelvic floor tone, infections
- Circulatory health — vascular function and blood flow
- Lifestyle and relationship factors — sleep, nutrition, toxins, stress and intimacy
Treatment by Concern
Low Desire (HSDD, low libido)
- Testosterone therapy — best delivered as bioidentical pellets for steady release, with topical transdermal options when appropriate
- PT-141 peptide therapy for enhanced libido ([Peptides] →)
- Stress and adrenal support ([Adrenal Fatigue] →)
- Medical-grade supplements such as DHEA, vitamin D and adaptogens ([Supplements for Sexual Wellness] →)
Difficulty with Arousal or Lubrication
- Testosterone therapy — optimizing testosterone is one of the most effective ways to improve arousal. At Glendale Whole Health we use bioidentical testosterone pellets for steady release or transdermal formulations when appropriate. While some providers prescribe testosterone injections for women, we do not, as these are not bioidentical.
- O-Shot® and Clitoxin — platelet-rich plasma ([PRP procedures] →) with or without botulinum toxin to improve sensitivity, blood flow and tissue response
- Acoustic wave therapy — stimulates new blood vessel growth and circulation
- Vaginal estrogen, DHEA or compounded bioidentical blends for lubrication and comfort
- Hyaluronic acid vaginal moisturizers for nonhormonal support
Orgasmic Disorder
- O-Shot® to enhance nerve and blood flow
- Clitoxin for added circulation and sensitivity
- Acoustic wave therapy for vascular support
- Topical therapies such as Scream Cream or compounded hormone blends
- Testosterone optimization to improve orgasmic strength
Painful Intercourse (Dyspareunia)
- O-Shot® or Clitoxin — regenerative therapies that can significantly improve dryness, sensitivity and pain with intimacy
- Bioidentical estrogen therapy to restore tissue elasticity and comfort
- Vaginal DHEA or compounded bioidentical creams
- Apex and InControl devices — at-home pelvic floor stimulation devices that improve circulation, nerve signaling and muscle tone
- Referral for pelvic floor physical therapy when additional rehabilitation is needed
Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) and Sexual Function
Stress urinary incontinence is leakage of urine with coughing, laughing, sneezing, exercise or intimacy. While many think of it as a problem only after childbirth or menopause, it is also very common in younger women — including athletes and women with obesity who have never been pregnant.
SUI can reduce confidence, increase anxiety about intimacy and impact arousal or satisfaction.
At Glendale Whole Health, we offer therapies that may improve both continence and sexual function:
- O-Shot® or Clitoxin — regenerative treatments that strengthen tissue, improve circulation and support urethral function
- Apex and InControl devices — at-home pelvic floor stimulation systems that enhance muscle tone, nerve signaling and blood flow
- Referral for pelvic floor physical therapy — guided rehabilitation when additional support is needed
- Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) — restoring estrogen and testosterone supports tissue elasticity, lubrication and urethral integrity
Some women also experience urge incontinence (overactive bladder) or a mix of stress and urge symptoms. While these are less directly linked to sexual function, hormone support and pelvic floor therapy may provide benefit.
Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)
- Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) — estrogen and testosterone with pellets or topical forms ([Bioidentical Hormones] →)
- Vaginal estrogen or DHEA for lubrication and tissue health
- Moisturizers and lubricants — hyaluronic acid for hydration, water or silicone-based lubricants during intimacy
- PRP or acoustic wave therapy for regenerative support
Moisturizers vs Lubricants
Patients often confuse these terms.
- Vaginal moisturizers are used regularly to improve baseline hydration and tissue comfort. Hyaluronic acid products can be especially helpful for dryness and thinning tissue.
- Lubricants are used during intimacy to reduce friction and discomfort. Options include water-based, silicone-based or natural oils when appropriate.
We guide you toward safe, effective choices — whether hormonal or nonhormonal — based on your needs.
What to Expect
Some women notice improvement in desire, lubrication and comfort within weeks. Regenerative therapies such as O-Shot®, Clitoxin or acoustic wave therapy may take several months for full effect. Pelvic floor devices like Apex and InControl can be used at home for daily support. Each plan is personalized to your goals and biology.
